2013 Ford Escape - Engine light on - OBDII gives "N/A" code

    My check engine light is on.  I have a MaxiScan MS300 OBDII scanner. It reads that the MIL is on, and says I have one error code, but when I go to check the code it reads "N/A" rather than the error code number?  Anyone know if there is a way to determine what is causing my indicator light to come on or how to get the scanner to read the error code properly?

     this may sound stupid, but have done an update on your scanner? if not, I recommend that you do. couldn't hurt to try if
