Maybe the circular metal part that the shifter cable passes through that rests and pivots within in the eye of the lever on transmission seized up and caused the shifter cable end to flex , fatigue and snap off like my buddy's old Toyota Sequoia cable broke off at the end when things rusted together that should pivot within each other.
