Hey folks, got an 04 545i with re-occuring vanos control issues for both exh and int cams, bank 1 (codes 2731, 27BB). The car does begin to run rough intermittantly and set these codes along (sometimes) with misfire codes on bank 1. I have eliminated the possibility of vanos control valves and misfires caused by plugs/coils.  The data shows the vanos positions as follows:
int position cyls 1-4 aprox 119degrees
int position cyls 5-8 approx 100degrees
exh position cyls 1-4 approx 119degrees
exh position cyls 5-8 approx 119degrees
    vanos adaptation intake 1-4 69dergrees
    vanos adaptation intake 5-8 129degrees
    vanos adaptation exh 1-4 66degrees
    vanos adaptation exh 5-8 71degrees

Any ideas from you fellow bmw guys? The 1-4 intake seems to be the one that gets out of whack.
    thanks

Just to let others know (sorry for the delay) the vanos control problems were caused by the vanos units themselves. Did not find any issues visually with them, but new ones cured the problem.
