Not sure if my unit is working or not...can you help

     I have a OBDII/EOBD+ABS unit. I have tried to read codes from three different BMWs from a 1998 to a 2012 model and it says no communication ?? What the heck....this is why I purchased this. I have a couple of the little Bluetooth units that communicate with the cars just fine...do I have a defective unit ?

    I was able to read a code from my neighbor's 2014 Ford truck, but it was a cryptic code that was not a Ford OBDII code...will these units not report the actual code given by the DME or at lease is a cross reference chart to look up the sprange codes it displays ??

     Harbor freight version of Autel MS906 generally has a 90 day warranty, but I would maybe make sure it has a good battery in it, a good seated connection of the cable at the scanner and no pins on the DLC end of the cable are missing or bent flat that you may not be aware of.
