Hi, I was trying to program a new key for a 2010 Ford Escape 3.0L.  The customer had only one key and I wanted to add an additional key.  I was able to get access to PATS using the service menu and when I hit add additional keys it says failed to communicate with module.  I was thinking about doing a parameter reset but it said I need two serviceable keys available. I only have 1 key that is programmed and 1 new key so I stopped. I was afraid of wiping out all the keys for the vehicle or worse wiping all keys and not being able to add any keys. I did not try from the diagnostic menu yet and I am waiting for vehicle to come back.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Make sure you have unprogrammed key in ignition while gaining acess, most of the
time adding a single key if programmed key is in while gaining acess and then turned
off to put unprogrammed key in will fail .ignition key erase doesn't matter but just
adding one key has to have unprogrammed key while gaining acess, hope that helps

     Hi Ede and Kawracerx
Thanks for your help.  I finally got the car back yesterday.  I don't think there is a problem with the link.  I tried to add keys in both service and diagonistic and would not let me in.  I did what you said ede and I erased the keys and was able to program 2 new keys. The new key was an ebay clone one and it worked without any problems.  I wish I saw kawracerx post before the vehicle came in and would like to have tried his option to see if it worked.  When I was trying to add the key I did have the original key in the ignition and not the new key.  Hopefully next time I can try the add key function to see if it works.  Thanks Ede and Kawracerx for your help.
