Some of the manufacturers let you use a J2534 and PC as scan tool but you must pay a subscription unless you buy OE hacked software online. If I remember correctly a J2534 can be used as dealer level scanner with: GM, BMW, Mini, Jaguar, VW, Audi, Toyota, Lexus, Land Rover, Volvo.  Also older versions of Honda HDS (V2.20) can be used with J2534 but you need to edit registry.

  That is correct. But is better to you have original OEM software in order to be able to do updates, coding and programming in ECU

Toyota techstream works great with J2534, Ede65 posted somewhere here in the forum how to do it. If you can't find the post let me know and will send the instructions to you by email.

  Check FORScan. Search the net. It's free, but do not compare with FORD OEM software. There is also ScanXL.
